Why a facial?

Skin care that does more than relax

Facials at a medical spa do more than the relaxation work of a traditional spa facial. The treatments combine professional-grade ingredients, technology where appropriate, and skin assessment that addresses specific concerns rather than just providing general care. Whether the goal is brightening, hydration, acne management, or targeted treatment of skin texture and tone, a facial at Lucie Mé is built around what your skin actually needs at that point in time.

We offer two distinct categories of facial treatment: traditional facials with skincare specialists for general care and maintenance, and signature device-based facials (OxyGeneo and MesoGold) for clients seeking deeper results. Both have their place in a long-term skincare strategy. Some clients alternate between the two; others stick with one category that suits their goals and skin type.

The first step

What happens at a facial consultation?

Facial consultations focus on understanding your skin, your daily routine, and your goals. The skincare specialist or clinician will examine your skin under appropriate lighting, ask about your current routine, sensitivities, and recent treatments, and recommend the right facial type for your specific case. For first-time clients, the goal is to establish a baseline and start with the appropriate treatment level; aggressive first-time treatment isn't always the best approach.

At Lucie Mé, consultations are complimentary. If you have specific concerns (active acne, melasma, recent breakouts), the consultation will recommend the facial type that addresses those concerns and may suggest additional treatments (chemical peels, microneedling, IPL) where the facial alone won't fully solve the issue. The aim is realistic recommendations rather than upselling.

What to expect

How our process works.

The consultation

The first appointment assesses your skin and recommends the appropriate facial type. For clients new to professional facials, a lighter treatment is typically suggested first; subsequent appointments build on that baseline.

The appointment

Traditional facials take 45 to 75 minutes depending on the treatment. OxyGeneo and MesoGold typically take 60 to 90 minutes. Most treatments include cleansing, exfoliation, the specific treatment work, hydration, and SPF application. Most clients find facials relaxing rather than uncomfortable.

The result

Immediate refreshment is visible after most facials: brighter, smoother, better-hydrated skin that holds for one to two weeks. Cumulative results from regular facials (every four to six weeks) include improved skin quality over time. Signature treatments like OxyGeneo and MesoGold typically produce more pronounced immediate results.

Signature treatment

OxyGeneo, the 3-in-1 superfacial

OxyGeneo combines three skincare actions in a single treatment: exfoliation, oxygenation, and infusion. The result is one of the more effective single-session facial treatments available.

Exfoliate. Oxygenate. Infuse.

Exfoliate

The first stage uses gentle exfoliation to remove dead and damaged surface cells, revealing fresh skin underneath. Different from chemical peel exfoliation, OxyGeneo uses a specific exfoliation pattern designed to work alongside the next two stages of the treatment.

Oxygenate

The signature step. Natural skin oxygenation from within, achieved through the Bohr effect: a controlled CO2 reaction at the skin's surface triggers the body's response to send oxygen-rich blood to the treated area. This brings nutrients and active ingredients into the treated tissue.

Infuse

Active ingredients are infused into the skin during the oxygenation phase, when receptivity is highest. Specific serums target hydration, brightening, anti-ageing, or active acne depending on the OxyGeneo formula selected.

MesoGold, gold-needle facial

Signature treatment

MesoGold, gold-needle facial

MesoGold uses a 99.9% pure 24-karat gold-plated surgical-grade microneedling device to deliver customised serum formulations directly into the skin. The combination of micro-channelling and serum infusion produces results beyond either treatment alone.

Adopting European technology, MesoGold's patented gold-plated hair-fine needle system creates micro incisions in the skin, allowing the serums inside the device to be easily channelled and absorbed. Gold-plated needles are preferred for this work because gold is biologically inert, doesn't trigger allergic reactions, and creates cleaner micro-channels than steel.

MesoGold is particularly effective for clients seeking improvement in superficial acne scars, enlarged pores, fine lines, uneven skin tone, and overall skin texture. The serum infusion adapts to the specific concerns being treated, with different formulations available for hydration, brightening, anti-ageing, and acne-prone skin. Most clients see meaningful change after three sessions; full-course results build over four to six sessions spaced four weeks apart.

Common questions

What people ask about facials

How often should I have a facial?

Most clients benefit from facials every four to six weeks, which matches the skin's natural cell turnover cycle. Less frequent than this (every two to three months or longer) still helps but produces less cumulative benefit; more frequent (every two to three weeks) is generally only recommended for specific treatment phases like clearing active acne or addressing a particular concern intensively. Signature facials like OxyGeneo and MesoGold are typically done in courses of three to six sessions spaced four weeks apart, followed by maintenance every four to eight weeks. The right schedule for you depends on your skin, your goals, and your overall skincare routine.

What's the difference between a traditional facial and a medical spa facial?

Traditional facials at general spas focus on relaxation, generic cleansing, and basic exfoliation. Medical spa facials use higher-grade products, often incorporate technology (devices like OxyGeneo or MesoGold, sometimes light therapy or radiofrequency), and are delivered by skincare specialists with more advanced training in skin conditions. Medical spa facials are also generally more targeted: a consultation identifies specific concerns and the facial is built to address them, rather than offering a single generic treatment. The right choice depends on what you're looking for: relaxation and maintenance versus specific results.

What is OxyGeneo and how is it different from a regular facial?

OxyGeneo is a signature device-based facial that combines three actions in a single treatment: exfoliation, oxygenation, and serum infusion. The oxygenation step is what makes it distinct from regular facials. By triggering a controlled CO2 reaction at the skin's surface, OxyGeneo causes the body to send oxygen-rich blood to the treated area, which delivers nutrients and active ingredients to a deeper level than topical application alone. The result is more pronounced immediate brightness and longer-lasting effects than a typical facial. Most clients see visible improvement after one treatment, with cumulative results across a course of three to six sessions.

What is MesoGold and is it the same as microneedling?

MesoGold is a microneedling treatment using 24-karat gold-plated surgical-grade needles, combined with simultaneous serum infusion. Gold needles are preferred over steel because gold is biologically inert (no allergic response), creates cleaner micro-channels, and doesn't degrade with repeated use. The simultaneous serum infusion is the difference from standard microneedling: serum formulations chosen for your skin are delivered through the same channels, addressing specific concerns like hyperpigmentation, fine lines, acne scarring, or hydration. Standard microneedling typically uses serums applied topically before or after; MesoGold's integrated infusion produces deeper penetration. The right choice depends on your specific goals.

How much do facials cost in Toronto?

Facial pricing varies by treatment type. Course packages of three to six sessions usually offer 10 to 20 per cent off the per-session rate. Add-on services (extractions, LED therapy, masques) sometimes carry additional cost. At Lucie Mé, the specific cost for the facial type appropriate for your skin is discussed at the complimentary consultation. The first appointment may be a longer combined consultation-and-treatment visit. There is. The estimate covers the full course rather than a single session, so there are no surprises partway through.

Will a facial help my acne?

Some facials help acne; others can make it worse. Acne-focused facials (typically incorporating salicylic acid cleansing, controlled extractions, antibacterial elements, and calming masques) reduce active breakouts and prevent comedone formation. Aggressive facials with strong manual extractions or stimulating treatments can trigger flares in already-active acne. For active acne, the consultation will recommend the appropriate facial type and may suggest combining with chemical peels (salicylic peels work well for acne) or other treatments. For severe inflammatory acne, dermatology referral for medical management is typically the first step; facials are part of a longer-term strategy rather than a primary treatment for severe acne.

Is there downtime after a facial?

Most facials have no downtime. The skin may look slightly pink for an hour or two after; this clears on its own. After more intensive facials (OxyGeneo, MesoGold), mild redness can last four to twelve hours, with some clients seeing very light flaking around days three to four. Skin tightness or slight tingling for a day after is normal. Standard advice is to avoid intense exercise, hot showers, saunas, alcohol, and direct sun exposure for 24 hours after stronger facials, since the skin is in an active state and recovers more quickly when not stressed. Makeup can typically be applied immediately after most facials.

Can I have a facial before a special event?

Yes, with appropriate timing. For a wedding, photo session, or other major event, schedule facials at least one week before. The week between treatment and event allows any temporary pinkness or minor breakouts (which can occur as the skin clears) to settle, leaving you with the post-facial glow at its peak. For first-time facials before an event, give two weeks; you don't want to discover during preparation that a particular ingredient or treatment doesn't suit your skin. For event-specific facials, OxyGeneo or a Classic Facial focused on radiance typically produces immediate visible improvement.

Do facials really make a difference long-term?

Yes, particularly when done consistently. Regular professional facials (every four to six weeks) maintain skin in a better baseline state than home care alone, particularly as skin changes with age, hormones, and seasonal factors. Cumulative benefits include better hydration, more even tone, fewer breakouts, and slower visible ageing. The most consistent users see compound results: clients who have facials regularly for years often look noticeably better than would be predicted by their age. Facials work alongside home skincare rather than replacing it; both matter. The biggest factor in long-term skin quality is consistent professional care combined with daily home care.

Can men have facials?

Yes, and male clients are an increasing share of facial bookings. Men's skin generally has more sebum production and thicker skin than women's, which means facials for male clients often focus on deep cleansing, pore work, and acne management more than anti-ageing or brightening. Many treatments suit male skin particularly well: extractions clear congestion that home care can't reach; salicylic-acid based treatments work well on oilier skin; OxyGeneo's pore-refining effect is often a strong fit. At the consultation, the facial type is recommended based on what your skin needs, not on gender; some men benefit most from acne or congestion-focused facials, others from anti-ageing work.

What should I avoid before a facial?

Avoid retinoids, exfoliants, and acid-based skincare for two to three days before a facial; these leave the skin more sensitive to exfoliation during treatment. Avoid waxing or other hair removal in the treatment area for one to two weeks before. Avoid intense sun exposure for at least a week before, particularly before stronger facials like OxyGeneo or MesoGold. Stay well-hydrated in the days before; well-hydrated skin responds better to treatment. Avoid significant alcohol consumption in the 24 hours before, particularly before signature facials. The specific pre-treatment guidance is given at the consultation based on the facial type.

Can facials treat melasma?

Some facials help with melasma; others can worsen it. Melasma is a sensitive pigmentation condition that flares with heat, sun exposure, hormonal changes, and certain skin treatments. Aggressive facials (deep heat treatments, strong exfoliation, devices that generate significant warmth) can trigger flares. Gentler facials with melasma-targeted serums (vitamin C, tranexamic acid, kojic acid) and cooling techniques can help. The consultation discusses melasma specifically because it requires a different approach from general pigmentation. Often the best results come from combining facials with broader melasma management: strict daily sun protection, prescribed topical treatments, and sometimes specific chemical peels designed for melasma-prone skin.
