Shape first, volume second

Why lip enhancement?

Shape first, volume second

Most people who ask about lip filler describe a shape problem, and only then a size problem. A lip border that's softened with age, so lipstick doesn't hold a clean line anymore. An upper lip that disappears when smiling. One side slightly fuller than the other. Lip filler is a hyaluronic acid gel placed precisely where the structure has changed, and for most clients the goal is definition and hydration rather than dramatic volume.

Working shape-first changes the result. Filler placed along the border restores the edge that makes lips read as defined in photographs and in person. Filler placed in the body of the lip adds fullness. The two are decided separately, in small amounts, so the lips stay in proportion with the rest of the face. It's the same thinking behind our approach to Botox: soften what bothers you, keep everything that's you.

The first step

What happens at a lip filler consultation?

Treatment starts with a consultation. The clinician will look at your lips at rest and while you talk and smile, because lips behave differently in motion and a result that only works in a mirror pose isn't a good result. You'll discuss what you want to change and what you want to keep. Photographs are usually taken for reference, and the product is selected to match the lip area, where softer gels behave more naturally than the denser gels used for cheeks or jawline.

At Lucie Mé, consultations are complimentary. If filler isn't the right approach for what you're describing, you'll be told that at the consultation, and pointed toward whatever would actually help. Many clients use the first visit to ask their questions, then book treatment once they've had a few days to think it over.

What to expect

From consultation to result

The consultation

The first appointment is a planning conversation. The clinician assesses your lips at rest and in movement, talks through shape and volume separately, and recommends a product and a starting amount. Photographs are taken for reference. Take as long as you need to decide. There's no commitment to proceed on the day.

The appointment

Lips are among the more sensitive areas to inject, so a topical anaesthetic cream usually goes on for 15 to 20 minutes first. The gel itself contains lidocaine, which numbs within seconds of the first injection. The injections take a few minutes; with numbing time, the whole visit fits inside an hour.

The result

The change is visible straight away, though lips swell more than most treated areas, so the first few days flatter no one. Swelling settles over two to four days and the final result shows at around two weeks. Lip filler lasts six to twelve months on average before a top-up.

Products for lips

Softer gels, made for movement

Lips move constantly, so lip products are formulated differently from the dense gels used to build cheek or chin structure. A lip gel needs to hold shape through talking, eating, and smiling without ever feeling firm.

Juvéderm Volbella

A soft, smooth gel from the Juvéderm range, designed for lip definition, hydration, and the fine vertical lines around the mouth. A frequent choice for first-time lip filler because the result reads as refreshed rather than filled.

Juvéderm Volift

A slightly denser gel from the same range, used where more supported volume is wanted in the body of the lip, and for the folds around the mouth. Often combined with a softer gel in a single plan: structure from one, finish from the other.

Selection at consultation

The right product depends on your lip anatomy, how much movement your lips carry, and the result you're after.

Lip enhancement

Individual results vary. Results depend on the treatment, your skin, and how your body responds; the gallery shows the range of outcomes these treatments can achieve.

The lips rarely age alone

The wider picture

The lips rarely age alone

The area around the mouth usually changes together. The nasolabial folds, running from the nose to the corners of the mouth, deepen as cheek volume drops. Marionette lines pull the corners of the mouth downward. Vertical lines gather on the upper lip. Treating the lips while ignoring the frame around them can leave a result that looks technically correct and still somehow off.

That's why a lip consultation at Lucie Mé often becomes a lower-face conversation. Filler in the nasolabial folds or marionette lines, both treatment areas on our dermal fillers page, can do as much for how the mouth reads as the lip filler itself. Sometimes the honest recommendation is a smaller amount in the lips and some support around them. The full picture of where fillers work across the face is on the dermal fillers page.

Common questions

What people ask about lip filler

How much lip filler do I need for my first appointment?

First-time lip filler is typically a single 1ml syringe, sometimes split across two sessions a few weeks apart for a gradual build. One millilitre sounds like more than it is: spread across both lips it produces a visible but measured change, closer to "you look well" than "you've had your lips done". Bigger changes are approached in stages so you can see the result and adjust as you go. Starting smaller is easier in every direction, since adding more later is a routine top-up while reducing an overfilled lip needs a separate dissolving appointment. The right starting amount for your lips is agreed at the complimentary consultation.

How long does lip filler last?

Lip filler lasts six to twelve months on average. The lips are among the most mobile areas of the face, and constant movement breaks the gel down faster than in still areas like the cheeks, so many clients land at the shorter end of that range. People who exercise frequently often metabolise filler faster again. The result fades gradually rather than disappearing overnight; most clients book a top-up when they notice definition softening, which for most works out to a maintenance visit every six to nine months. Booking maintenance before the previous filler is fully gone keeps the result stable instead of starting from zero each time.

Does lip filler hurt?

Lip injections are the most uncomfortable of the common filler treatments, and there are two layers of numbing to deal with that. A topical anaesthetic cream goes on for 15 to 20 minutes before treatment, and the filler gel itself contains lidocaine, which takes effect within a few seconds of the first injection. Most clients describe the start as a quick pinch and the rest as pressure more than pain. Discomfort afterwards is brief; the lips feel tender and swollen for a day or two, the way they might after a minor knock, and settle from there.

How long does swelling last after lip filler?

Lips swell more than any other commonly treated filler area, and the swelling peaks in the first 24 to 48 hours. This is worth knowing in advance, because the day-one mirror check alarms almost everyone; your lips at their most swollen are not your result. The swelling settles over two to four days, and the final shape and size show at around two weeks, once the gel has fully integrated with the tissue. Some clients notice mild morning swelling for the first few days that eases as the day goes on. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated for the first night or two helps.

Will my lips look fake or overdone?

No, not when the product, the amount, and the placement are chosen well. Overdone lips come from too much volume placed without regard for the border, the proportions of the face, or how the lips move when talking. The approach here runs the other way: a natural-looking result preserves your lip shape, so the lips look like your lips, slightly fuller and more defined. The clinician assesses your lips in motion at the consultation and recommends a starting amount, typically a single syringe, that can be built on later. If you want a fuller look than that, it's a conversation, and a staged one.

Can lip filler be dissolved?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid lip filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, an enzyme injection that breaks down the gel so the body reabsorbs it. The effect is usually visible within 24 to 48 hours, and older or denser filler occasionally needs a second enzyme appointment. Reversibility is one of the strongest arguments for HA fillers in the lips specifically, because taste in lips changes and an overfilled result from years ago doesn't have to be permanent. If you've had lip filler elsewhere and don't like it, dissolving before starting fresh is a normal path; bring photos of the earlier work to the consultation if you have them.

What should I avoid after lip filler?

Standard advice after lip filler is to leave the lips alone for the first 24 hours: no lipstick, no rubbing or pressing, no kissing anything firmly. Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and hot environments for 24 hours, since raised blood pressure and heat both increase swelling, and hold off on saunas and steam rooms for 48. Sleep with your head slightly elevated for the first night or two to keep swelling down. From day two, normal life resumes, and by the two-week mark the result is settled enough for anything, including photographs.

What's the difference between lip filler and a lip flip?

They work on different structures. A lip flip uses a small dose of botulinum toxin (the same product family as Botox) along the top edge of the upper lip, relaxing the muscle so the lip rolls slightly outward and shows more of itself. It adds no volume. Lip filler places hyaluronic acid gel in or along the lips, adding structure, definition, or fullness that's physically there. A flip suits someone whose upper lip disappears when smiling but looks fine at rest; filler suits thinning, asymmetry, or lost definition. The two are sometimes combined. Which fits your lips is exactly what the complimentary consultation is for.

Can I have lip filler while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No, lip filler isn't given to clients who are pregnant or breastfeeding. There's no specific evidence of harm, but there's also no published safety data for HA filler in pregnancy or lactation, and a cosmetic treatment doesn't justify the unknown. Pregnancy also changes the lips and face directly, through fluid retention and swelling, which makes assessment unreliable and results unpredictable. The general position across Canadian cosmetic practice is to wait until after pregnancy and breastfeeding have ended, and most clinicians prefer around three months after that, so the face has returned to its baseline before anything is placed in it.

How much does lip filler cost in Toronto?

Lip filler in Toronto is priced per syringe, typically 1ml. First-time lip treatment usually needs a single syringe, so that range is close to the full first-visit cost for most people; a staged plan across two sessions spreads the same amount rather than doubling it. Ongoing cost depends on how fast you metabolise the filler, with most clients topping up every six to nine months. At Lucie Mé, the specific cost for your treatment is discussed at the complimentary consultation, after the product and plan have been agreed. For the exact cost of your treatment, talk to one of our experts: your quote is confirmed at the complimentary consultation before anything is booked.

Which lip filler product is best?

The best product is the best match for your lips and your goal. Softer gels like Juvéderm Volbella suit definition, hydration, and fine vertical lip lines, and they're a common choice for a first treatment because the change is easy to live with. Slightly denser gels like Juvéderm Volift carry more supported volume in the body of the lip. Often more than one product appears in a single plan, structure from one and finish from another. The selection is made at the consultation after the clinician has assessed how your lips are built and how much they move.

How long before an event should I get lip filler?

Two weeks is the safe minimum between lip filler and an event where you'll be photographed. The result is visible immediately, but lips swell more than any other filler area, and the first several days show a version of the result that's larger and less refined than the final one. By two weeks the swelling has fully resolved, any small bruises have cleared, and the gel has integrated, so what you see is what the camera gets. For a wedding or anything similar, four to six weeks out is better still, leaving room for a top-up or adjustment if you want one.
