Why lipolysis?
Non-surgical fat reduction for stubborn areas
Lipolysis is a non-surgical treatment that dissolves localised fat deposits that haven't responded to diet and exercise. It's not a weight-loss treatment; it's a body-shaping treatment for specific areas where fat sits stubbornly despite a healthy lifestyle. The treatment is delivered as a series of small injections directly into the fat layer of the targeted area, and the fat is broken down and eliminated naturally by the body over the following weeks.
Clinically, lipolysis has been shown to be safe and effective with virtually no downtime. The treatment is popular in Europe, where it's often called non-surgical liposuction or the liposuction alternative. It produces real body-fat reduction without the surgery, anaesthesia, scars, or recovery of conventional liposuction. Most clients see meaningful change after two to four sessions; full-course results typically need three to six.
The first step
What happens at a lipolysis consultation?
The consultation assesses the areas you want to target. The clinician will examine the fat deposits in question, pinch-test to confirm that the fat is the kind lipolysis can treat (soft subcutaneous fat rather than firm or fibrotic fat), and discuss realistic outcomes. They'll also ask about your overall weight stability, since lipolysis works best in clients who are at or near their preferred weight and want to shape specific areas rather than reduce overall body fat.
At Lucie Mé, consultations are complimentary. The number of sessions needed depends on the area and the volume of fat being treated; the clinician will give a realistic estimate at the consultation, typically two to six sessions spaced two to four weeks apart. If you're significantly above your target weight, you may be told that lipolysis isn't the right starting point and that overall weight management is a better first step. Honest assessment is part of the consultation.

What to expect
From consultation to result
The consultation
The first appointment is an assessment of the area or areas you want to target. The clinician will examine the fat, confirm suitability for lipolysis, and discuss the likely number of sessions. Photographs are taken for tracking. Take as long as you need to decide.
The appointment
Treatment consists of a series of microinjections delivered into the fat layer of the targeted area. The injections themselves feel like small pinches; some clients describe a mild warm or burning sensation as the solution begins to work. Sessions are typically 15 to 45 minutes depending on area size. There's no anaesthesia and no incision.
The result
Some mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the treated area is expected for one to five days. The breakdown of fat happens gradually over four to six weeks per session, as the body's lymphatic system processes and eliminates the dissolved fat. Visible reduction develops between sessions. Most clients see meaningful change after two to four sessions; full results typically require three to six sessions spaced two to four weeks apart.
How it works
Phosphatidylcholine and deoxycholic acid
Lipolysis treatments use a combination of two compounds that are naturally occurring substances in the body. Both are injected directly into the targeted fat layer where they break down fat-cell membranes and trigger natural elimination by the lymphatic system.
A natural lipid that's a major component of cell membranes. In lipolysis treatment, it disrupts the integrity of fat-cell membranes, releasing the fat content. Phosphatidylcholine can also be derived from soybeans, where it's harvested for clinical use. The body recognises it as a familiar substance, which is one reason allergic reactions are very rare.
A natural bile-acid component produced by the body to help digest dietary fat. In lipolysis, it works alongside phosphatidylcholine to emulsify and break down the released fat content. The combination is more effective than either compound alone because each addresses a different stage of the fat-breakdown process.
Specific area
Lipolysis for the double chin (submental fat)
The double chin (clinically called submental fat) is one of the most-requested lipolysis treatment areas. It's also one of the most-responsive: the fat in this area is typically the soft subcutaneous kind that lipolysis breaks down most effectively, and the treatment area is small enough that even modest fat reduction produces a clear change in jawline and profile.
Most clients need two to four sessions on the submental area, spaced three to four weeks apart. Some swelling for two to four days after each session is normal and is part of the visible response: as the swelling settles, the new contour becomes apparent. Final results from a full course are typically visible at three to four months. Combining lipolysis with HIFU on the lower face produces stronger results for clients who have both fat and skin laxity contributing to a softer jawline.
Common questions
What people ask about lipolysis
Is lipolysis the same as liposuction?
No. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that physically removes fat through a cannula under anaesthesia, with incisions, sutures, and weeks of recovery. Lipolysis is a non-surgical injection treatment that dissolves fat with naturally occurring compounds (phosphatidylcholine and deoxycholic acid), letting the body eliminate it through the lymphatic system over the following weeks. The trade-offs: lipolysis treats smaller, more localised areas and takes multiple sessions; liposuction can treat larger volumes in a single procedure but requires surgery. Lipolysis is sometimes called "non-surgical liposuction" because it produces real fat reduction without the surgery, but the mechanism is fundamentally different and the volume of fat removed per session is smaller.
How many lipolysis sessions will I need?
Most clients need three to six sessions for a full result, spaced two to four weeks apart. The exact count depends on the area and how much fat is being treated. Smaller areas like the double chin often respond well after two to four sessions. Larger areas like the abdomen or thighs typically need four to six. The fat-breakdown process is gradual: each session dissolves a portion of the fat in the treated area, and the cumulative effect builds across the course. Treating closer together than two weeks doesn't speed results; it just adds inflammation. Some clients see acceptable results after fewer sessions and stop; others continue for additional refinement.
Does lipolysis hurt?
The injections themselves feel like small pinches, similar to filler injections. After the solution is delivered, some clients experience a mild warm, burning, or tingling sensation in the treated area as the fat-breakdown process begins. This can last several minutes and then settles. The treated area is typically tender to the touch for one to five days, similar to a mild bruise, and may feel firmer than usual as swelling settles. Pain is generally minimal and manageable without further intervention; topical numbing or oral over-the-counter pain relief can be used if needed. Most clients work and exercise normally the day after treatment.
How much does lipolysis cost in Toronto?
Lipolysis in Toronto is priced per session and varies by area treated. Full-course packages of three to six sessions usually offer a 10 to 20 per cent discount. The total cost for a complete course depends on how many sessions are needed and which areas are being treated; at Lucie Mé, the specific cost for your treatment is discussed at the complimentary consultation after the area has been assessed. Combining lipolysis with HIFU on the same area is also discussed where appropriate.
Is there any downtime after lipolysis?
Most clients return to normal activity the same day or the next day. Some swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the treated area is normal and lasts one to five days. The area may feel firmer than usual for a couple of weeks as the fat-breakdown process proceeds. Larger treatment areas (abdomen, full thighs) typically show more visible swelling than smaller ones (double chin). Avoid massaging the treated area for the first three to five days. Vigorous exercise on the treated area can be paused for two to three days for comfort. Standard activities like work, social life, and light exercise resume immediately. Wearing compression garments after thigh or abdomen treatments can support comfort.
Will the fat come back?
The fat cells that lipolysis breaks down are eliminated from the body permanently. They don't grow back. However, the remaining fat cells in the treated area can still expand if you gain weight, so significant weight gain after treatment can change the appearance of the treated area, though typically not back to the pre-treatment state. The best long-term results from lipolysis come when treatment is done at a weight you can maintain. Significant weight loss or gain in the months after treatment makes assessing the final result harder. Most clients who maintain stable weight see durable results from their treatment course.
Who is not a good candidate for lipolysis?
Lipolysis isn't suitable for clients who are significantly overweight; the treatment works best for clients at or near their preferred weight who want to shape specific areas. Clients with very firm or fibrotic fat (sometimes the case after pregnancy or significant weight changes) respond less well than those with softer subcutaneous fat. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and certain medical conditions (liver disease, kidney disease, autoimmune conditions, bleeding disorders) preclude treatment. Severe obesity, recent significant weight loss without stabilisation, and certain medications also need discussion at the consultation. If lipolysis isn't right, alternative treatments (HIFU, radiofrequency body contouring, lifestyle changes) are discussed.
Can lipolysis treat cellulite?
Lipolysis can contribute to cellulite improvement in some clients, but it's not specifically a cellulite treatment. Cellulite is caused by a combination of fat deposition and the way fibrous bands attach the skin to underlying tissue, creating the dimpled appearance. Lipolysis addresses the fat component but doesn't release the fibrous bands. For best cellulite results, lipolysis is often combined with treatments that target the bands and the skin surface (RF skin tightening, microneedling, sometimes targeted massage therapy). The consultation is where realistic expectations are set: lipolysis alone produces partial cellulite improvement in some clients; combined treatments typically produce better results.
How is lipolysis different from RF skin tightening and HIFU?
They work on different problems. Lipolysis is an injectable that dissolves a localised pocket of fat, which the body then clears naturally. RF skin tightening and HIFU don't remove fat: they firm and lift the skin above it, RF by heating the dermis to stimulate collagen, HIFU with focused ultrasound at greater depth. The treatments often complement each other, and your clinician will confirm whether you would benefit from fat reduction, skin tightening or both.
When will I see results from lipolysis?
Some initial change is visible after the first session as the body begins to process the dissolved fat, but the more substantial result develops gradually over the four to six weeks following each session. Most clients see meaningful change between sessions two and three. The full result from a typical three-to-six session course is visible three to four months after the final session, by which time all the dissolved fat has been eliminated and the treated area has fully settled. Photographs at consultation and at intervals make the change much clearer than memory; subtle gradual change is hard to track day to day but obvious in comparison images.
Can lipolysis treat gynaecomastia (male breast tissue)?
Lipolysis can treat the fatty component of male breast enlargement (gynaecomastia) when it's caused by excess subcutaneous fat rather than glandular tissue. The treatment is the same principle as for other areas: a series of microinjections that dissolve the fat in the targeted area. For glandular gynaecomastia, where actual breast tissue is present rather than just fat, lipolysis is less effective and surgical options are usually required. The consultation will assess which type of gynaecomastia is present (sometimes both fat and glandular tissue contribute), and lipolysis may be appropriate alone, in combination with other treatments, or referred elsewhere depending on findings.
How does lipolysis compare to liposuction in cost?
Lipolysis is generally significantly less expensive than liposuction. Beyond cost, the trade-offs are significant: lipolysis requires no surgery, no anaesthesia, no time off work, and produces gradual results across multiple sessions; liposuction is a single procedure but involves surgical risk, recovery time, and a more significant commitment. For smaller localised areas, lipolysis is often the more proportionate choice. For a full quote on your specific plan, talk to one of our experts at the complimentary consultation. There is.
